So, with that little tangent out of the way, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty and talk some ANXIETY, people!

Anxiety Is On The Rise. Reasons Why. Research Around It. 

Anxiety is undoubtedly on the rise.

And that probably comes as a shock to … well … absolutely no one. 

Because (not to play the victim card here), but it’s no secret that our generation is dealing with an especially unique (read: bizarre) host of issues. 

I mean, with the increased pressures of social media combined with seemingly never-ending political drama (and not naming any names here, but also extremely dramatic politicians using social media 👀), it’s a stressful world out there, folks. 

Just think about how often you hear a friend, coworker or even a complete stranger say something about anxiety. 

At least once per day? Twice? Maybe even more? 

If it feels like anxiety is becoming a more and more frequent topic of conversation, this is not just a random coincidence.

It’s because more and more people actually ARE struggling with anxiety than ever before. 

And how exactly do I know that’s the case?

Research, baby.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), anxiety disorders are THE most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older (that’s 18.1 percent of the population) every single year.  

And it’s only getting worse. 

In 2017, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) ran a poll of 1,000 U.S. citizens and found that more than a third of respondents were “more anxious overall” than the previous year. 

In 2018, the APA repeated that exact same poll and found that overall anxiety had increased yet again.  

And both the 2017 and 2018 polls found that millennials were the most anxious generation.

… No surprise there 🙄 . 

If that’s not enough to convince you, Barnes & Noble saw a 26 percent jump in sales of books related to anxiety from June 2017 to June 2018. 

26 percent!

So, how do keep this problem from reaching epidemic proportions? 

Although we, unfortunately, can’t control many of the outside stressors that are causing our anxiety, what we can do is control how we choose to manage it.

Ways to Address Anxiety

As we mentioned earlier, (remember that whole freight train/tidal wave/fill in the blank with anything overwhelmingly large and ominous thing?), anxiety hits hard

But, because you’re a badass, you can hit back harder 👊. 

Here are our top five, tried-and-true, all-natural remedies for anxiety:

 

  1. Exercise. Remember when Elle Woods famously said “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.”

    Well, homegirl was right.  There are an endless number of studies that show a direct correlation between physical activity and reduced anxiety. This is because exercise does indeed release endorphins (aka the mood-boosting chemicals in your brain) and also decreases cortisol levels (aka the stress hormone). The best part is, according to the ADAA, five minutes of exercise is all that’s needed to stimulate the anti-anxiety effects of physical activity. So, whatever your preferred method of working up a sweat is, be like Nike and just do it.
  2. Meditation. So, if you’re anything like me and your mind is constantly bouncing from one thought to the next, meditation can be a much more daunting task than one would expect. This is because meditation is more than just closing your eyes and enjoying the quiet. True meditation is the process of replacing your mind’s chaotic (read: anxiety-inducing) thoughts with the mindfulness of the present moment. It’s easier said than done, but if you can commit to it, it’ll pay off. In fact, a study from Johns Hopkins shows that just 30 minutes of daily meditation can help to improve symptoms of both anxiety and depression. Need some assistance?   3. Aromatherapy. Just typing the word “aromatherapy” makes me feel calmer.  You’ve heard of essential oils, right?  Well, aromatherapy is the process of using essential oils to better your health and promote overall well-being. Whether you choose to inhale them directly, apply them topically, add them to a warm bath (my personal favorite… I know you were wondering) or diffuse them, certain essential oils are known to help relieve anxiety. And, if that’s not enough, they also smell pretty dang incredible. A few of the frontrunners for anxiety relief are lavender, valerian, jasmine and bergamot.
  4. Ditch Caffeine. Excuse me, WHAT?  Yeah … I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you’re struggling with anxiety, your thrice-a-day (or more) coffee habit is not helping matters. How can this be? Well, research shows that, in addition to boosting your alertness and energy levels, caffeine also has some negative effects, including that it stimulates anxiety. Yikes.  However, if the thought of ditching coffee all together is just too much to handle, try simply cutting back on your caffeine intake and keeping a journal of how the change affects your mood and anxiety levels. If you’re seeing less caffeine is resulting in lesser anxiety, cutting caffeine is likely the answer.
  5. … And Ditch Alcohol, Too. Yeah, I know. These so-called “remedies” are only getting worse and worse, but hear me out. While a post-work glass (or four… no judgement) of Pinot Noir will take the edge off and reduce anxiety in the short-term, once the buzz wears off, you’re likely to be left feeling more anxious than before. (Cue the Sunday scaries.) Try replacing your regular boozy nightcap with a piping hot mug of chamomile tea, which research shows combats anxiety by helping to calm the nerves and promote better sleep.
