What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is experiencing a significant increase in popularity as its numerous health benefits become more widely known. This can mistakenly lead people to believe that it’s a new compound, but it’s not. In order to clarify, we’re going to give you a short history lesson, define CBD oil, and go over some of the most popular uses.

What is CBD and What is CBD Oil?

CBD is short for cannabidiol. Simply put, this is a chemical compound that naturally occurs in cannabis and hemp plants. It has several medicinal uses, and it’s popular in edibles and oils. CBD promotes a feeling of calm and relaxation when you take it. Also, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD isn’t psychoactive. This means that it won’t get you feeling “high” when you take it.

So, what is CBD oil? CBD oil is an oil made by extracting CBD out of the hemp or cannabis plant. Once the oil is extracted, it gets diluted with a carrier oil like hemp seed or coconut oil. It’s then bottled and sold.

CBD oil works on your body’s endocannabinoid system. This system’s primary goal is to help your body adapt to any outside stress points. Your body naturally produces endocannabinoids. Since CBD is a phytocannabinoid, it works to mimic your body’s natural endocannabinoids.

You have receptors for cannabinoids in your immune, nervous, and digestive system. This means that CBD oil will interact with almost every bodily system you have. It’s not a cure-all, but CBD oil can perform a lot of beneficial functions.

The History of CBD

Hemp has been around and in use for centuries, but CBD is relatively new. In fact, it was a British chemist who first reported that there were individual structures that made up CBD in 1940. Just two short years later, an American chemist by the name of Roger Adams successfully isolated CBD. It was this research that led to the discovery of THC as well.

There was general confusion about which compound had which effect on people. Researchers had difficulty isolating each compound until 1963. This is the year that Dr. Raphael Mechoulam identified CBD’s stereochemistry. In 1964, he linked the euphoric feeling people get with THC.

In 1978, New Mexico passed the Controlled Substances Therapeutic Research Act. This was a landmark victory that legally recognised that cannabis had great medical value. In 1996, Proposition 215 made medical marijuana use legal in California. Seven other states soon followed suit with Alaska, Oregon and Washington in 1998, Maine in 1999 and Colorado, Nevada and Hawaii in 2000.

The Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 officially did away with considering hemp marijuana. They removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act because it’s a very valuable commodity in the agricultural sector. It contains only trace levels of THC.

Researchers were now free to look deeper into medicinal uses for CBD. As they have gone farther, they’ve discovered more and more uses for it.

CBD Oil Uses

There are several CBD oil uses today, and it’s popular with people who have chronic pain. The pain-relieving and relaxation properties are very well documented around the world. Some of the most popular CBD oil uses include:

  • Manage Anxiety and Stress – The natural compounds found in CBD oil can help you manage your stress and anxiety levels. It works to reduce your body’s natural stress response, and it also lowers the amount of the stress hormone, cortisol. It also helps our bodies stop the breakdown of important chemicals like anandamide and serotonin. In turn, we feel happier and more relaxed.
  • Reduces Inflammation and Pain – Whether you use CBD oil topically or sublingually, it’s very effective at reducing inflammation and chronic pain. One study showed that mice that received doses of CBD oil showed significantly reduced pain signals and inflammation after just four days.
  • Helps with Gut Health – People who have problems with irritable bowel syndrome or inflammation in their digestive tract can benefit from CBD oil. Studies show that it helps to relax the intestinal muscles and reduce spasms. It also reduces your inflammation levels, and this can reduce your intestinal permeability.
  • Calms Seizure Activity – CBD oil can help to regulate seizure activity by regulating your central nervous system. In one study, someone went from having 300 seizures a week to three a month after they started taking CBD oil.
